I am making a spider bridge saddle insert, maple with an ebony cap. What should the grain orientation, relative to the height of the insert, in the maple be? Verical? Horizontal? Diagonal?
I have cut some with the grain vertical and it seems to bend a little more than I think it should.
Any thoughts are welcome.

Ron-
I don't know if this will help, but fiddle bridges have the piece quarter-sawn- ie the grain lines run parallel to the soundboard.

Ummm...John

Yes,
Violin family bridges are definatly quarter sawn.

But NO, the grain does not run parallel to the soundboard, it runs Perpendicular to the grain of the sound board.

Ron,

When you make the bridge out of perfect quartersawn stock...the end grain will show the layerd growth rings hoizontal to the deck of the instrument.

In reality one face of the bridge shuld be perfectly quartered to show the medullary rays, The other face will be slightly off quarter.

Huh?
Would it be clearer if I'd said 'parallel to the plane of the face of the soundboard'??

Looking at the pic in the link should clear this up.

Forget about the grain direction of the soundboard for a moment....
..."plane of the soundboard"...

Anyway, 'nuff said (in any font size)
